Formula

Adult weight ≈ Current weight ÷ Age in weeks × 52
Example: A 12-week-old medium-breed puppy weighing 10 lb is estimated to reach about 43 lb as an adult, with a likely range of 37–50 lb. It is roughly 23% grown.

Healthy growth

  • Feed a food labeled for growth — large-breed puppy food for dogs expected over about 50 lb.
  • Keep puppies lean; fast growth strains developing joints.
  • Weigh every couple of weeks and follow your vet’s growth chart.

Frequently asked questions

How do I predict my puppy’s adult weight?
A common formula is (current weight ÷ age in weeks) × 52. A 10 lb puppy at 12 weeks is estimated at about 43 lb as an adult.
How accurate is the puppy weight formula?
It is a rough guide, most reliable for small and medium breeds under 6 months old. Large and giant breeds keep growing for 15–24 months and are often underestimated. The parents’ weights are the best predictor.
When do puppies stop growing?
Toy breeds around 9–10 months, small breeds 10–12 months, medium breeds 12–15 months, large breeds 15–18 months and giant breeds 18–24 months.
Do paw size and weight at 16 weeks help?
Big paws hint at a bigger dog but are unreliable. Some breeders double the weight at 16 weeks for medium breeds as a second estimate.
