The strip method
Strips needed = Wall width ÷ Roll width (rounded up)
Strip length = Wall height + Pattern repeat + 4 in trim
Strips per roll = Roll length ÷ Strip length (rounded down)
Rolls = Strips needed ÷ Strips per roll (rounded up)

Example: Walls totaling 48 ft wide and 8 ft high, with 20.5-inch × 33-ft rolls and no pattern repeat: you need 29 strips of 100 inches. Each roll gives 3 strips, so buy 10 rolls.
Before you hang
- Prime new drywall so the paper can be removed later.
- Start next to a window or door and use a plumb line for the first strip.
- Check the label for paste-the-wall or pre-pasted paper.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate wallpaper rolls?
Work out how many full-height strips you need (total wall width ÷ roll width) and how many strips one roll gives (roll length ÷ strip length). Divide and round up.
What size is a standard roll?
European rolls are about 20.5 in (0.53 m) wide and 33 ft (10.05 m) long. Many U.S. rolls are 20.5–27 in wide and sold as double rolls.
How does pattern repeat affect the amount?
Each strip must start at the same point in the pattern, so you lose up to one repeat per strip. A 21-inch repeat on 8-ft walls can drop you from 3 to 2 strips per roll.
Should I buy extra wallpaper?
Yes — buy one extra roll from the same batch (lot) number. Colors can vary slightly between batches.
