Final exam grade formula

Needed = (Target − Current × (1 − w)) ÷ w

w is the final’s weight as a decimal (25% = 0.25).

Example: Your current grade is 82%, you want an 85% overall, and the final is worth 25%. Needed = (85 − 82 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = (85 − 61.5) ÷ 0.25 = 94%. If you score 0, your grade would be 61.5%; with 100%, it would be 86.5%.

Study planning tips

  • Run a few scenarios. Check what you need for each letter grade to set a realistic goal.
  • Focus on high-weight topics that appear repeatedly in homework and past exams.
  • Talk to your instructor early if the required score is very high — there may be options such as extra credit or a retake policy.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the grade I need on my final?
Required final score = (target grade − current grade × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight, with weights as decimals. With an 82% current grade, an 85% target and a final worth 25%: (85 − 82 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = 94%.
What if the result is over 100%?
Then the target is not reachable with the final alone unless extra credit is available. The calculator also shows the highest grade you can reach with a perfect score.
What does “current grade” mean?
It is your weighted average in the course so far, based on everything except the final. Most learning platforms (Canvas, Blackboard, Google Classroom) show this number.
What weight should I use for the final?
Check your syllabus. Finals are commonly worth 15–40% of the course grade.
